I put together the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! post yesturday. Looking at everyone’s tribes it looks like few are over the 20 person threshold to be made public. So, in the grand scheme, does the average joe have a chance or is the oxygen going to be sucked out of the room by the big names? I’m at 5 members and haven’t moved for a good while.

I dont get the point of it. I just write articles for my tribe and do it all for the adulation of strangers?

Kind of, I suppose. Kind of like the old days around here when things would routinely end up in the FP. I’m not sure either what they want to do with it. . I’ve been playing with it, but the thing is kind of a mess.

Granted I don’t know much about it, but from the stuff I’ve read on oppo it sounds a lot like a car related bleacher report. The monetization of blogs have changed, but I don’t see it ending well and it will just over saturate the content market. People will figure out how to write blogs that generate the most page views or whatever bullshit stat they come up with next to feed that ad and affiliate economy.
There was a good article on deadspin of an early b/r contributor and I would urge anybody putting effort into drive tribe to read it.

I’ll make some assumptions and say that the key differences will be mostly due to changes in the Internet economy (pageviews for ads vs. affiliate links and consumer info sales). It’s a tricky game when you profit off consumer generated content and there may be a balance that can be struck, but it requires much more transparency than b/r had in their early days where they ruled the slideshow blog.

I think a lot of it has to do with their search system. It’s a bit clunky, and only uses the name of your group and the words in your two-line synopsis. On a car-based site, not many people will think to look for aircraft, so maybe you could include words like “classic”, “military” or “cool” to draw in a few more eyes.
The alternative is to upload photos to photo-led tribes with a link back to yours, but I try to limit my spam mortars to 2 a day, and never in the same place twice;)
